German Orange Cake

2/3 cup butter, softened

1 3/4 cup sugar

2/3 cup butter. softened

1 3/4 cup sugar

2 eggs

3 cups plain flour

2 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 1/4 cup milk

2 tsp grated orange rind


Mix all ingredients together and pour into 2 (9 inch ) greased and floured cake pans.  Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes.


Filling:

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup orange juice

2 Tbsp butter

2 Tbsp grated orange rind

2 Tbsp lemon juice


Mix sugar, cornstarch and salt in saucepan.  Gradually stir in orange juice.  Bring to boil over direct heat, stirring constantly.  Boil 1 minute; remove from heat.  Stir in rest of ingredients.  Cool.  Spread between the cooled cake layers.
